English Version

Nowadays the videogame industry has overgrow other industries like cinema and music and it seems to be available for big fishes only: huge game studios like Electronics Arts, Naughty Dog, Square Enix or even Zynga share their profits for successful mega productions and franchises like Call of Duty, Uncharted, Final Fantasy or Cityville. Although there is room for small developers, a few indies that want to accomplish tehir dream to develop a cool videogame and show it to the world.

Nikolas Zorko, a.k.a Johnny Guitar, is one of those indie developers struggling for make his dream with Codename Dead Matter, an open world survival based zombie game made with Crysis SDK.

We had the chance to help with this project taking care of asset modelling. There is a long way to go but we also wanted to share few words with Nikolas about this project and how he sees the indie market. This is what he told us.

Tell us a brief description of your background
Well, typically I like to keep quiet about my background so I won't being going into large details, however; I was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada I have pretty much lived here my entire life and I absolutely love the city as it is, we have quick access to the Rocky Mountains and if we wanted to we could spend a weekend and head down to Washington in the United States. The city has also expanded into a metropolis since I was born, it went from a 6 digit population to a 7 digit population. So many memories in this city, I really like it here and it would take a lot for me to move.

What videogame project are you working right now? Is this your first try in the industry?
I am currently working with my team on a video game project codenamed Dead Matter, it is an open world zombie game that takes place during and after a zombie apocalypse, it also focuses on survival. I feel that it is a video game that has been long craved but nobody has ever been able to deliver it, and attempts to try and deliver it have failed cough dead island. I've seen a lot of projects similar to mine pop up, but only two have gotten somewhere. The first one is Jasper Hope's zombie simulator, its mostly portfolio based but I have high hopes for it. There have been talks about integrating our two games and there hasn't been a no or yes for sure. It will be discussed further in the future, even if we don't merge I still wish him the best of luck and I hope it is successful in landing him a job or getting him some serious coin.

Which was your first game experience (as a gamer)?
Oh, so many examples. I'd have to say for game experience it would probably have to be the Nintendo entertainment system, and for FPS it would definitely be unreal gold I loved that game to pieces, the next major game that I really enjoyed was Return to Castle Wolfenstein by Id software, that game was pure awesome and it definitely deserves a mention.

When did you decide that you wanted to make games? Who inspired you?
After playing so many different games I touched modding for Halo CE, but I actually ignored it before jumping back into it, I wanted to create my own game and I was quite inexperienced and had little knowledge of how basic logic would even function. So I looked at a program called FPS creator, and they were my main influence, however not as influence but more of a confidence builder; for me to try, fail and try again until it worked. Because that’s all developing in the early stages is, trial and error. Eventually I left the community and went on to the Source SDK and the hammer mapping tool, I took many tutorials and as I worked I took more tutorial soaking up as much knowledge as I could. My second map was quite popular and gained around 40k downloads on Garrysmod.org and the Garrysmod toybox. I left the mapping community very recently due to my brushwork being stolen and used without my permission, after 1200 hours spent in the SDK I felt as if it was enough time. But there was always the cryengine that I played with, and I even worked on a few mods for Crysis however they were never released and unfortunately all chances of retrieving the files were gone as I dropped the hard drive and broke it as I was transferring it to my new computer. I've spent an extensive amount of time on them and they were all gone and lost. However all of this lead me to create my shortlived mod State Of Emergency and its succesor codenamed Dead Matter, and thus I consider all of that one large influence that pushed me towards this industry, I also consider Gabe Newell a huge influence because I wish to treat my community with the same respect that he does. I also will never put a DRM on my title or abandon the PC.

What is your main responsibility you have in the development of the project?
I handle a few background tasks, such as creating decals, archetype entities , prefabricated entities, particle effects, majority of the games code via a flowgraph system. This includes the Zombie AI, inventory and HUD system, as well as coordinating cut scenes. I work with the creative director whom coordinates all of the 3d modeling team, as well as Druox who manages voice acting and actors, I haven't asked but he may be up for some audio work as well. Finally, what I formerly do and what I am best at is level design and level design theory. I breath life into the game and its a very rewarding thing to do I plan to branch into 3d modeling and hopefully some more C++ by the end of this project.

Any upcoming project?
We may have a special project being released for the Crysis 2 SDK using some assets from Dead Matter, however the main upcoming project is Codename Dead Matter

Where do you think the industry is heading to?
Honestly I think that PC gaming is starting to make a comeback and that some indie developers are really starting to flourish due to the larger studios only caring about how much money they can rake in from an audience, and layering their games with DRMs to give themselves a false sense of security about piracy.

Give an advice to the people that want to start working indie on the videogame industry
Build up your connections, they mean everything in this industry, and remember that connections can be built more easily outside of indie game development, also have things to show to people if you want to convince them to work with you. Post on forums and try to incorporate fan ideas into your game, and if you don't incorporate their ideas give a valid argument on why not.

Which was the most recent game you have played?
Saints Row the Third, I love this game and have poured tons of time into it, I have also been playing Battlefield 3 as well as Mass Effect 2 and hopefully Mass Effect 3 when it gets released.

Tell us about your hobbies and the things you do in your free time (if you have any free time)
Sleep, sleep is what I like to do in my free time.

How could people follow you in social media and find out more about Dead Matter?
They can monitor my youtube account, the forum thread and my twitter account.
